How to Choose A Daycare

When choosing a daycare, it is important to pay strict attention to what is going on. Be involved! These criteria will help you determine which daycare center is right for you.

1. STAFF--How do they treat the children? Are there enough staff members on duty to support the needs of the children? Do they discuss your child with you? Do they have experience?

2. FACILITY--Is the equipment safe (both indoor and outdoor)? Does Does it have sanitary bathrooms and diaper-changing areas?

3. HEALTH AND SAFETY--Is the furniture safe? How about the play materials? Do they have a readily available first-aid kit? What are the procedures for picking up your child? Are cleaning materials and medicines kept safely out of reach of children?

4. PROGRAM--Is the child-staff ratio balanced? Do you observe creative play? Is there an organized schedule or program? Is there supervised rest time? Does the provider read stories to the children?

5. GENERAL-How is good behavior encouraged? Are other parents visiting or involved with children? Do you see generally happy children?
